ABOUT THE PROGRAM
Portland Adventist Academy, founded in 1910, began its International program in 1995.
While some students remain for just one school year, many choose to remain at PAA for several years and obtain a U.S. High School Diploma. International students can experience a lot at PAA.

Mission Travel with PAA
International students live with American host families and are assigned American student mentors to help with homework and to go on outings; like to the bowling or to the pumpkin patch. PAA is the only Portland area high school with a student mentor program for international students.
International Student Registration and Orientation begins with our Smart Start classes in mid-August and the regular school schedule beginning early September continuing through mid-June. Smart Start is a two week orientation program for first year students. It includes half-day grammar and English immersion classes and afternoon field trips to local sites with PAA American students. We also have a summer immersion option for students wanting to try an American experience.
We have a wonderful music program, including band, a choir program, a string orchestra, guitar classes, a recording studio, and music theory course. Our science program’s award-winning teachers, ensure that each student reaches his or her potential. Extra-curricular activities include music, soccer, basketball, golf, cross-country, community service, worship programs, rock climbing, mountaineering, snowboarding, and skiing.
Once at PAA, students will be tested for English proficiency. With a TOEFL internet-based test (iBT) exam score of 71 or higher, students pay a lower tuition rate. Those who achieve a GPA of 3.25 or higher may apply for AP, Honor, and College Credit classes and are eligible to apply for Honor Society Club membership.
Recent graduates have been accepted at the State University of New York at Binghamton, Sophia University, Purdue, and Penn State University. We are proud of the commitment students have shown to their studies and encourage all applicants to consider their college choices before graduating from PAA. Many graduates have obtained scholarships through private firms. The International Student Director is always available to help students with scholarship and college applications.
